My brand new Nissan Murano randomly caught fire ... trying to determine why (posted 8/29/16)
Nissan's marketing campaign is "innovation is what we do, excitement is your experience". You can say that again. We recently experienced Nissan's 'Innovation' in a horrific way. While at rest, in a mall parking lot, July 12th, our Nissan Murano, with less than 6,000 miles on it, spontaneously caught fire from (what we suspect is) a faulty Nissan Murano Anti-lock Brake Actuator. The theory is that this device ignited a fire that consumed the entire front half of the vehicle. An electrical 'flashover' sent super heated toxic flames across the inside passenger compartment, of the Nissan Murano, reaching the rear window in seconds. It was not until the fire department arrived that the toxic event, inside the Nissan Murano, of super heated molten plastic, rubber, leather, fabric and metal was able to be extinguished. After the fire department's foaming exercise brought the lava like Nissan Murano inferno under control, we were left with an internally charred carcass of 'excitement' that was a total loss.
Nissan declined any attempts at discussion related to the event. Spokespeople for Nissan instructed us to work with our insurance provider or consult legal counsel, and that they were removing themselves from any liability or culpability. The dealership, Autonation Nissan Arapahoe, where the car had been the week before for an ABS light that had just appeared on the dash, took the same stance - work with your insurance company or seek legal counsel. We never got any answers on why it happened, why a vehicle, at rest, would ignite, burn and kick off a life altering event that continues to this day.
The research posted here is an attempt to understand 'why' this event occurred, and, until we gain knowledge of the cause, to warn others that they may be exposing their children, home, or other valuable assets to Nissan's life altering 'excitement'. Nissan owners and prospects, please be mindful and cautious.
Official Nissan classification, under Case #22959375, is a "thermal event".
We'll post more as the marathon effort to gain answers continues ....

Nissan brings problems like the ABS Fires & Takata Air Bags on themselves by placing profits of the company above the most basic concerns for their customers. Public relations nightmares such as this one could be mitigated or avoided entirely by hiring and retaining high-character employees at every level of the organization. These are the people who will fight to balance profit against the company's responsibilities to the public. Nissan gets an F.
June 10th, 2017 - This One's an Armada, but Same Problem
The fire was started in a Nissan Armada that belonged to Brian Foster, who is from the Chicago area. He had parked his SUV in the self-park garage to go to his job as a store manager. Foster had noticed a strange vibration while he was driving and decided to check under the hood. That's when he saw that the car was on fire. "The fire blazed from the hood and it blew me away," Foster said. A bit stunned and shaken, Foster took the elevator down to the garage office for help. Workers there called 9-1-1. Foster said he was grateful that he only lost his cellphone and a few cherished pictures of his son. "I'm glad I'm alive. The main thing is that I'm alive," Foster said.

February 3rd, 2017 - Look What Just Surfaced
Poltergeist: "they moved the headstones, but left the bodies". Nissan goes through the motions, but keeps releasing faulty vehicles to the consumer. Of course, no mention of fire, but Nissan knew they had serious problems. This is an attempt at 'low cost mitigation' rather than any concern for public safety. To this day, Nissan takes no responsibility for knowingly shipping vehicles that can catch fire resulting in serious injury, including death.
"Nissan is committed to a high level of customer safety, service, and satisfaction and are working with dealers to provide an outstanding ownership experience to Murano owners". WRONG. 30+ years dealing with some of the leaders in industry, Nissan North America is by far the worst corporation I have ever dealt with. Just mind boggling. A true disgrace.
IMPORTANT: It is a violation of Federal law for dealers to sell or deliver vehicles in their inventory covered by this notification until the campaign repair is performed. YES IT IS. It's a crime. Guilty.

See Attached - Proves Nissan knew of the Fire Danger and Slow Rolled, or denied, Notification
"..... the brake fluid leak may create an electrical short in the actuator circuit, which in rare instances, may lead to a fire".
How many fires do you need before it stops becoming 'rare' and is no longer an 'allegation'? When does a thermal event become a dangerous car fire?

January 5th, 2017 - Lilburn, GA - some dealers still don't know
LILBURN, GA (Local): A fire overnight Thursday (1/5/2017) burned cars in a Gwinnett County car dealership's (Stone Mountain Nissan) service center. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County fire department said when firefighters were able to force their way into the dealership, they found a vehicle on fire, near several other vehicles. They fought heavy black smoke and heat as they worked to prevent the fire from spreading to the Stone Mountain Nissan offices and showroom. They were able to get the fire under control about 20 minutes after they arrived and ventilated the smoke from the building. Authorities said it appeared to start in the engine compartment of a 2016 Nissan Maxima. The alarm company called 911 to initially report the fire. Please see fire department incident report below. VIN research by SSWM validates this vehicle VIN: 1N4AA6AP2GC439781 Year: 2016 Make: NISSAN Model: MAXIMA PLAT Number of Open Recalls: 1 NHTSA Recall Number: 16V-636 Recall Date: August 31, 2016 Manufacturer Recall Number: PC482 is for the faulty ABS actuator.
We reached out to Joe Pallone, Stone Mountain Nissan Service Manager, for comment on why the known problem vehicle was left inside, unattended, overnight. He has not returned our calls.

December 22nd, 2016 - near Austin, TX
Same story. Road blocks and feet dragging when trying to get answers and directive from Nissan North America. No help, no loaner car. Owner took the vehicle in for the recall. With no ABS light on, dealership released the car. The rest is horrific. Disgraceful.
November 20th, 2016 - Dallas, TX
We were contacted today, December 10th, by a consumer near Dallas, TX. His Nissan Maxima ignited November 20th in a parking garage. The dealership had released it after being in for the recall. The communication between Nissan North America and the dealerships is horrible. The owner/consumer has huge exposure with life threatening risk. Both entities should be held lable.

We know you held it from the Consumer, but at least tell your dealers of the danger!

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:18 AM Friday to a report of car fire inside Arlington Nissan’s service garage area, 1100 West Dundee Road Arlington Heights, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a car fire inside the Express Service Center inside the southwest corner area of Arlington Nissan. Engine 4’s crew on arrival reported smoke showing from Side A and Side B. Engine 4’s interior crew about 12:30 a.m. reported the fire involving a single car appeared to be extinguished, and that they were completely knocking the fire with a 2 1/2-inch line. A sprinkler system activation contained the fire and mostly extinguished the fire. Firefighters immediately went to work ventilating and clearing smoke from the service garage area. No injuries were reported. Nissan North America, Inc. issued a recall about vehicles at risk of vehicle fires on Friday September 2, 2016. Early Friday September 9, 2016 it was not known if the vehicle that caught fire at Arlington Nissan was a vehicle affected by the recall.
Please see the Safety Recall Notice (below) sent to Dealerships dated 9/7/16. Probably just being delivered to Arlington Heights Nissan that morning. We were able to obtain, through the Freedom of Information Act, the Arlington Heights Fire Department Incident Report (below). While they would not speculate it was ABS related, fire in engine compartment was the cause. Owner of the Black Nissan Murano, if you are out there, would love to speak with you.

Nissan Knew of Takata Airbag Hazard for Years, Suit Says
Plaintiffs in a class action say internal documents from Nissan show that they continued to use the flawed parts to save on costs. Please see the attached Court Filing Made by Plaintiffs in the Takata Case. Take a look at the full legal document. The fresh allegations against Nissan point to a far deeper involvement by the automaker.
